In Part 1 of this series, I talked about the best “supernatural coach” The Holy Spirit who gives us the power to reach and sustain our goals. In Part 2, I talked about supernatural training and how we are essentially Spirit, with a soul, living in a body. Everything starts in the spirit or in the unseen realm and then influences the soul and then the physical or “natural realm”. When we are training spiritually, we focus on the unseen. With our natural eyes, it may appear that fasting and praying are doing nothing, but it provides the most effective results than focusing on physical training on its own. In this part three we are going to discuss the results of spiritual training but before I get into that I am going to give some more details on why I decided to fast fitness. Fasting in combination with prayer is one of the most powerful combinations for supernatural results.
In Mark chapter 9, a group of disciples attempted to rebuke an unclean spirit from a boy who when into bouts of seizures because of this unclean spirit. We have no information on what the open door was for that unclean spirit to enter this bot except that it had been there since his childhood. These disciples were unsuccessful at rebuking the unclean spirit and asked Jesus why they were unsuccessful. Jesus responded in verse 29 (NKJV) with “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting. This scripture suggests that prayer and fasting help to increase our faith. This is supernatural result #1 – an increase in faith.
One of my prayers while I was fasting was “Lord, release the excess off my life” I knew there we still some things I needed to surrender to the Lord because I would seek food for comfort or company instead of Him. I was doing it less, but it seemed to be a repeating occurrence, I had to continuously comfort myself. I knew this was a spirit of gluttony because it can be so subtle and sometimes, as Christians, we are slow to call this sinful behavior. A gluttonous spirit can manifest as someone who always clears off their plate, mindless snacking, or compulsive shopping. In addition to fasting at least one meal for 21 days, I also eliminated sugar, did perfect keto (because this helps to have a more successful fast), cut out processed food, and removed excess clothing and items from my home. During the mealtimes I fasted, I used to spend more time in prayer, worship, and studying the Word. If you want to make more space in your life for the things of God, this is a good strategy. This is supernatural result #2 – more time.
Another one of my prayers during this fast was “Lord, take away my appetite and give me hunger for you”. See, sometimes the root of our uncontrolled hunger is because we have a big God-sized hole in our hearts. We are craving what only Jesus can satisfy and that is why nothing else can fill and we constantly feel like we are missing something. When you fill yourself up with spiritual food and water (The Bible and the presence of God), these unwanted cravings and anxiety will start to disappear. Isaiah 58:6 reads, “Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?”. If you feel that you are in any kind of bondage. Fasting and prayer can break those unseen forces holding you back, leading you to deliverance and true freedom in Christ. This is supernatural result #3 – deliverance.
I want to share that I used to fast often before COVID-19. In 2020, I had a mental health breakdown that led to the deepest depression of my life. A spirit of heaviness came upon me, and it seemed like my life was going backward. In another episode, I will share my full testimony, but the point is that I took up some bad habits, put on over 30 lbs. in a few months, and couldn’t in my strength get it together. If you know me personally, I had always been a fit and disciplined person, but what I was going through was spiritual and only the power of the Holy Ghost could help me. After this episode, fasting became really hard and almost impossible but I built my spiritual muscles back up little by little. I started doing partial fasts, by eliminating certain desirable foods. Then I started closing my eating window, for example, picking a “stop eating” time. For fasting to be considered spiritual training, it must be combined with prayer, if not it’s just another diet. I joined a global revival group that regularly fasts, every week, a weekend every month, and other spiritual occasions. This ministry also provided prayer guides, prayer points, and other resources that help. If you are interested in joining its www.repentancerevival.com, it is free to join.
There are many other supernatural results to prayer and fasting and engaging in spiritual training such as an increase in spiritual authority and power. You become more in tune with the spiritual world as your spiritual senses develop, you experience breakthroughs in different areas of your life, you hear the voice of God more clearly, you think better and more aligned with the Father, and you can resist temptation and are less moved by your emotions. I could go on because the benefits are limitless and eternal. For those seeking to be more spirit-led, spiritual training is essential. Spiritual training isn’t a more popular concept because most humans prefer their “quick fix” results that they can see, their motives are off, and don’t desire spiritual things.
For me, yes, I want to be fit but I have come to understand that true fitness starts in the spirit. My physical fitness is a reflection of my spiritual, mental, and emotional fitness. I can say with confidence that I am in better shape now than I was 20 years ago because I have allowed the Holy Spirit to work in my life. All the Glory to God!!! I also have to testify to God’s promises which are always true. In Mathew 6:33 (ESV), “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” This is a promise of God with a condition. When I decided to fast fitness and fast and pray for God to take over every area of my life, this is when I actually started to see the results I was looking for: freedom from diets and all things holding me back from my God-given purpose.
