In Part 1 of this series, I talked about how we do not truly reach and sustain our fitness goals, or any goals, without the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our “Supernatural Coach” here to help us to move in God’s will with power and effectiveness. This part 2 series will focus on the type of training that is required to achieve supernatural fitness. I want to start by explaining a little bit more about the meaning of supernatural which means beyond what is natural. The natural world is what we can see, taste, touch, hear, and feel with our natural senses. Most of the time we depend so heavily on these senses that we think this is the only dimension that exists. There is a world that is more real that this world and it’s called the supernatural or “invisible realm” of the spirit. Everything in the natural world was once in the invisible realm. For example, every invention was once an idea; every written law was once a precept; and every work of art was an inspiration and so on. We also existed in the spirit realm before we were born. Jeremian 1:5 (ESV) says “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” God already knew you before your parents did and he created you with a purpose and He is calling you into that purpose right now.
Do you know what your purpose in life is? Many people spend the entirety of their lives searching for the meaning of life, but you cannot find meaning in creation, only in the creator. It’s like trying to figure out how to put a piece of furniture together without the instructions; its that much harder. God gives us an instruction manual; called the Bible also referred to as the Word of God. The Bible was never meant to be a religious book but one that explains how both the natural and supernatural worlds work and interact with each other. When you start looking at the Bible as an instruction manual that will help you walk in your purpose, and into everything God promised, it becomes a powerful weapon. I wrote a lesson titled “The One Thing that Transformed my Health and Fitness” (YouTube) that described a powerful fundamental concept that changes how I viewed fitness and explained why I was not able to achieve my fitness goals. I was only looking at my physical fitness in the natural and not seeing my fitness in a wholistic (yes with a “w”) or looking at my fitness supernaturally. 1 Timothy 4:8 (ESV) states “for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” Some religious people use this scripture as an excuse to not take care of our bodies but that’s not it all.
God desires for us to be fit but to prioritize our spiritual fitness first because when we are spiritually fit, it helps us become emotionally and mentally fit, and we will then be able to achieve and sustain our physical fitness. This is why most diets fail because they fail to address the spiritual part of humanity, even holistic approaches cover the soul but miss the spiritual. This spiritual or supernatural approach to fitness has helped me so much because it takes the emphasis off of natural measures like the weight on a scale or the size of my clothes but focuses me on something that will last me more than a lifetime; my godliness, my discipline, my peace, my emotional strength, my patience and other things that cannot be easily measured because they are unseen. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 (ESV) says “For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”
Another aspect of spiritual training is focusing on training like an athlete. Athletes don’t think about how to get a six pack of abs or how to look a certain way, they focus on being the best athlete they can be. 1 Corinthians 9:24-26 says “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air.” Training like an athlete is about being disciplined, creating a plan, and sticking to that plan regardless. It’s about everyday being a better version of yourself, starting with spiritual discipline. When I help others create a fitness plan it must be wholistic, incorporating spiritual, soulical (pertaining to the soul), and physical activities.
Supernatural training focuses on training the spiritual senses, the spirit is trained doing spiritual exercises such as prayer, fasting, worship, and praying in tongues (also known as praying in the Holy Ghost). There are other activities that can be considered spiritual fitness (for example: reading the bible is spiritual food) but these are the main exercises that will build our spirit man and give us spiritual endurance. Jude 1:20 (ESV) says “But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit”. In part 1, I mentioned that I fasted from fitness, where I was praying and fasting meals so that my spiritual resistance could increase,

and my spiritual senses could be developed.
Mark 9:29 (ESV) says, <<And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.>> When my spirit man can resist the enemy, He must flee. I knew there were some things still holding me back and that only fasting would help. Praying in tongues is biblically normal but it’s not often taught and less commonly practiced. I always incorporate praying in tongues in my prayer time because this builds my faith, increases my spiritual power and authority, and grants me more ability to prosper. I will explain much more in the next part of this series when we talk about the results of supernatural training. Being supernaturally focused is something that can help us move in power in every area of our lives because we become more Spirit-led. My desire is to see you pursue your God-given purpose with revelation, direction, and Holy Spirit power. For more free resources to help you live a powerful life visit www.empoweringlives.online.
