Are We Living in the End Times? A Biblical Guide to Recognizing the Signs and Being Prepared

The warnings of the end times are becoming clearer with each passing day. If you’re wondering,

“What are these signs? And the end of what?” — keep reading. Understanding what the Bible says about the end times can bring clarity, peace, and confidence amidst the mixed emotions many feel—ranging from fear and anxiety to excitement and hope.

What Are the “End Times”?

The “end times” described in the Bible refer to a series of events leading up to the culmination of history as we know it—sometimes called the end of the age, the end of the world, or the final days. But the Bible’s “end” can mean several interconnected things, depending on context. It’s not just about destruction but the transition from this current world into God’s eternal kingdom.

Importantly, no one knows the exact day or hour when these events will unfold:

“But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son,[a] but the Father only. For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.”— Matthew 24:36-37

So if you ever hear someone predict a specific date for Jesus’ return, remember even Jesus Himself does not know the timing.

Key Biblical Signs of the End Times

The Bible, especially in books like Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21, Daniel, 2 Timothy, 2 Thessalonians, and Revelation, lists clear signs pointing to the end times. Here’s a checklist to help you stay informed:

End Times Checklist

1. Wars and rumors of wars (Matthew 24:6-7)

2. Famines, pestilences, and earthquakes (Matthew 24:7)

3. Persecution of believers (Matthew 24:9)

4. False Christs and false prophets (Matthew 24:4-5, 11, 23-24)

5. Increase of wickedness and loss of love (Matthew 24:12)

6. The gospel preached to all nations (Matthew 24:14)

7. The Abomination of Desolation (Matthew 24:15; Daniel 9:27)

8. Signs in the heavens—sun, moon, stars (Luke 21:25-26)

9. The coming of the Antichrist / Man of Lawlessness (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4)

10. The Great Tribulation—unprecedented suffering (Matthew 24:21)

11. Increase in knowledge and global travel (Daniel 12:4)

12. Resurrection of the dead and final judgment (Revelation 20:11-15)

Two Parables That Illuminate Our Current Season

There are two powerful stories from Jesus that deeply resonate with the spiritual realities of our current time. These parables help us grasp the urgency and nature of the end times we may be living through right now.

Current Global Spiritual Landscape

As of May 2025, the world population stands at approximately 8.2 billion people. Of this, around 32% (2.66 billion) identify as Christian. But it’s important to remember: Anyone can call themselves a Christian, but God alone judges our hearts. If you’re unsure whether you are truly saved and born again, I encourage you to read my blog post titled “Do You Believe That Jesus Is the Son of God and That’s Enough to Be Saved?” for clarity and guidance.

Of the global population, about 16% (1.33 billion) are considered truly born-again Christians — those sealed by the Holy Spirit, living in a genuine relationship with Jesus. These are the ones who can look forward with excitement and hope to Jesus’ return because they have the promise of the Father.

Here’s the striking truth: 16% is exactly half of 32%. When you compare born-again believers to those who simply identify as Christian, the ratio is 1:2 — or one-half. This is the same proportion described in the two parables Jesus told.

The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins (Matthew 25:1–13)

Jesus tells of ten virgins waiting for a bridegroom’s arrival. All had lamps to light the way, but only five were wise enough to bring extra oil. The other five were foolish and did not. When the bridegroom was delayed, all became drowsy. At midnight, a shout announced his arrival, but the foolish virgins’ lamps were going out. They asked the wise virgins to share oil, but there wasn’t enough for all.

The foolish virgins left to buy more oil and missed the bridegroom’s arrival. The door was shut, and the bridegroom said to them, “Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.”

This story reveals the difference between those who are merely professing faith and those who are truly spiritually prepared. It reflects the current global spiritual reality where only about half of those who call themselves Christians are genuinely born-again and ready.

The Parable of One Taken, One Left (Matthew 24:40-41)

Jesus describes a scene during the end times where two people are working—one is taken, and the other is left behind:

  • “Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.”

  • “Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and the other left.”

This sudden separation is often understood as describing the Rapture, when believers are caught up to meet Jesus, and others remain. Again, this division closely mirrors the spiritual ratio of the world: half will be ready, and half will not.

Are You Ready for the Divine Appointment?

We are living in what seems to be the divine timing Jesus described. The year 2025 is already being marked as a year of the “closed door”—a time of decision.

Will you be among the wise virgins, filled with the Holy Spirit, ready and watchful? Or will you be left behind, excluded from one of the most extraordinary moments in human history?
