When a Marriage Is Hurting, There Is Still Room to Pray

Few things are more painful than watching a marriage fall apart. Separation, ongoing conflict, and divorce proceedings can bring overwhelming grief, disappointment, confusion, and fear. What once began with love, promises, and hope may now feel distant, broken, or beyond repair.

Perhaps you are experiencing this pain in your own marriage. Maybe your spouse has moved out, communication has become difficult, or conversations repeatedly turn into arguments. Perhaps you are facing divorce proceedings and wondering whether reconciliation is still possible.

You may even be praying for a family member or friend whose marriage is in crisis.

Whatever the circumstances, remember this: You can bring your pain to God, ask Him for wisdom, and pray for healing even when you cannot control the outcome.

Welcome to Day 8 of our 14 Days of Prayer and Fasting for Marriages! Today, we are interceding for couples experiencing separation, deep marital conflict, and divorce proceedings. We are asking God to bring healing where there is pain, repentance where there has been wrongdoing, wisdom where there is confusion, and restoration wherever reconciliation is possible and healthy.

Our prayer is not about forcing someone to remain in a marriage. It is about inviting God into the situation, seeking His direction, and trusting Him to lead every person toward truth, healing, and wise decisions.

1. Bring Your Marriage Before God in Prayer

James 5:16 teaches:

“The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” — James 5:16 (ESV)

Prayer is a powerful way to seek God's intervention when a marriage is struggling. When we pray, we acknowledge that we need His wisdom, strength, and guidance beyond our own abilities.

However, prayer is not a way to control another person's decisions or guarantee a particular outcome. Instead, it helps us surrender our circumstances to God while remaining willing to follow His direction.

If your marriage is experiencing separation or serious conflict, pray specifically for:

  • Repentance: That each spouse would honestly examine their own actions, acknowledge wrongdoing, and take responsibility for the harm they have caused.

  • Healing: That God would bring comfort to wounded hearts and help both spouses process grief, disappointment, anger, and broken trust.

  • Wisdom: That each person would have the discernment to make thoughtful decisions rather than acting out of fear, anger, or pressure.

  • Communication: That conversations would become more honest, respectful, and constructive wherever communication is safe and appropriate.

  • Reconciliation: That God would open the door to meaningful restoration when both spouses are willing and reconciliation is healthy and safe.

Do not underestimate the importance of praying for your own heart. Ask God to reveal attitudes that need to change, words that need to be spoken, apologies that need to be offered, and boundaries that need to be established.

Sometimes, the first step toward restoration is not a conversation with your spouse. It is a sincere conversation with God about your own heart.

2. Pursue Peace, Humility, and Unity

Ephesians 4:2–3 encourages believers to walk:

“With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” — Ephesians 4:2–3 (ESV)

These instructions are especially important when a marriage is under pressure.

Conflict can cause spouses to become defensive, impatient, and focused on proving who is right. Over time, harsh words, accusations, resentment, and unresolved offenses can create emotional distance.

God calls us to humility, gentleness, patience, and love. These qualities do not require us to ignore wrongdoing or pretend that serious problems do not exist. Rather, they help us address difficult issues without deliberately humiliating, manipulating, or harming one another.

If you have contributed to the conflict, be willing to acknowledge it. If you have spoken harshly, consider offering a sincere apology. If you have broken trust, take responsibility and demonstrate meaningful change.

At the same time, remember that reconciliation requires the willingness of both spouses. One person cannot repair a marriage alone, and no one can force another person to forgive, return, or reconcile.

You can pray for restoration without attempting to control the outcome. You can pursue peace without compromising truth. And you can extend love while maintaining healthy boundaries.

If communication is unsafe because of abuse, threats, coercion, or violence, prioritize safety and seek qualified assistance. Reconciliation should never be pursued at the expense of someone's safety.

3. Remember That God Is Near to the Brokenhearted

Psalm 34:18 offers this beautiful assurance:

“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (ESV)

Separation and divorce can create a deep sense of loss. You may grieve the marriage you hoped to have, the family traditions you cherished, or the future you imagined together.

Even when you are surrounded by people, the pain can feel isolating. You may struggle with questions that seem impossible to answer: Why did this happen? Could I have done something differently? Will things ever get better?

God's Word reminds us that He is near to the brokenhearted.

You do not have to hide your grief from Him. You can bring Him your tears, disappointment, confusion, and fear. You can ask for strength when you feel exhausted and wisdom when you do not know what to do next.

If your spouse has chosen separation, you may not be able to change that decision. But you can seek God's help as you navigate the uncertainty. You can pursue personal healing, establish appropriate boundaries, and surround yourself with trustworthy people who will support you.

If you are the spouse who has caused harm, you can begin by acknowledging the truth, seeking genuine repentance, and taking responsibility for your behavior without demanding immediate forgiveness or reconciliation.

And if you are praying for another couple, remember to offer compassionate support rather than judgment or pressure. You may not know the full story, but you can pray, listen, and encourage them to seek wise guidance.

Your pain does not make you invisible to God. He is near, even in the seasons when you cannot see how your situation will unfold.

4. Protect the Children and Seek Wise Support

Marital conflict affects more than the husband and wife. Children and extended family members may also experience fear, confusion, sadness, and uncertainty when a relationship is breaking down.

Children may blame themselves for their parents' arguments or feel pressured to choose sides. They may struggle to understand changes in their household, routines, or relationships.

As parents, we can take practical steps to protect their emotional well-being.

Avoid using children as messengers, involving them in adult disputes, speaking negatively about the other parent in front of them, or asking them to take sides. Offer age-appropriate reassurance, maintain stable routines when possible, and let them know that adult marital problems are not their fault.

When needed, seek qualified support for the entire family.

Depending on your circumstances, helpful resources may include:

  • Pastoral guidance: A trustworthy spiritual leader who offers compassionate, biblically grounded support.

  • Professional counseling: A qualified therapist or marriage counselor who can help address conflict, grief, communication, and emotional healing.

  • Family counseling: Support for children and parents navigating changes in family relationships.

  • Legal guidance: A qualified family law attorney who can explain your rights, responsibilities, and options when separation, custody, or divorce proceedings are involved.

Seeking help does not mean that you have failed God. It means you are taking responsible steps to address a difficult situation.

If divorce proceedings have already begun, continue to pray while also obtaining appropriate legal advice and meeting your obligations. Prayer and practical responsibility can work together.

5. Your Day 8 Practical Challenge: Take One Step Toward Healing

Today, identify one constructive action you can take toward healing, communication, or appropriate support.

Depending on your circumstances, your next step might be:

If you are experiencing marital conflict: Set aside time for a calm conversation, listen without interrupting, or acknowledge one area where you need to take responsibility.

If you are separated: Consider whether a respectful message, mediated conversation, or counseling appointment would be appropriate and safe. Respect your spouse's boundaries and do not pressure them to respond.

If trust has been broken: Identify one meaningful step toward accountability, honesty, or professional support.

If divorce proceedings are underway: Schedule a consultation with a qualified family law attorney if you need legal guidance. You can pray for wisdom and reconciliation where appropriate while making informed decisions.

If you are supporting another couple: Offer to pray with them, listen without judgment, or help them identify a trustworthy source of support.

If children are affected: Take one step to reassure them, protect them from conflict, or connect them with appropriate support.

Do not measure progress only by whether your spouse changes their mind or returns home. Sometimes, progress begins with greater clarity, healthier communication, personal accountability, or the courage to seek help.

Ask God to show you the next faithful step, and then take it with wisdom and grace.

Day 8 Prayer: Praying for Restoration Amid Separation and Divorce

Heavenly Father,

In the mighty name of Jesus, we bring before You every marriage experiencing separation, deep conflict, broken trust, or divorce proceedings.

Lord, You see every wounded heart, every unanswered question, every tear, and every family struggling to find its way forward. We ask You to bring healing where there is pain, wisdom where there is confusion, and restoration wherever reconciliation is possible and healthy.

Father, search our hearts. Reveal the attitudes, choices, and behaviors that have contributed to the brokenness in our relationships. Give us the humility to acknowledge our mistakes, the courage to repent, and the grace to take responsibility for the harm we have caused.

Where there is anger, bring wisdom and self-control. Where there is bitterness, begin the work of healing. Where trust has been broken, guide us toward honesty, accountability, and meaningful change.

We pray for spouses who are separated and struggling to communicate. If reconciliation is possible and safe, open the door to honest conversations, mutual understanding, and renewed commitment. Help both spouses recognize what needs to change and give them the willingness to take appropriate steps toward restoration.

For those facing divorce, grant wisdom, peace, and discernment. Guide them toward decisions that protect their well-being and the well-being of their children. Surround them with trustworthy spiritual mentors, qualified professionals, and compassionate people who can provide meaningful support.

Father, we especially pray for the children affected by marital conflict. Protect their hearts and minds. Remove the burden of guilt, fear, and responsibility that does not belong to them. Help parents provide reassurance, stability, and love, even during difficult transitions.

For those who feel abandoned, strengthen them. For those overwhelmed by grief, comfort them. For those who have caused harm, lead them toward genuine repentance and lasting change.

Lord, teach us to trust You even when the future is uncertain. Help us pursue peace without compromising truth, extend grace without ignoring wrongdoing, and seek reconciliation without attempting to control another person's decisions.

We place our marriages and families in Your hands. Lead us in the way of wisdom, surround us with Your peace, and help us take the next faithful step.

In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
