14 Days of Prophetic Prayer and Fasting for Marriages

Theme: Returning to God's Design, Covenant, and Purpose for Marriage

Key Scriptures: Genesis 2:18; Mark 10:8–9; Ephesians 6:10–18 (ESV)

What if the breakthrough your marriage needs begins with a simple but powerful question: What does God say about marriage?

Before we pray against conflict, fight for restoration, or ask God to change our spouse, we must first return to the foundation: God's original design for marriage.

Welcome to Day 1 of our 14 Days of Prophetic Prayer and Fasting for Marriages! Whether your marriage is thriving, struggling, healing from past wounds, or standing at a crossroads, these next 14 days are an invitation to seek God together and invite Him to shape your marriage according to His Word.

This is not simply a call to pray for your spouse. It is a call to allow God to work in your own heart, transform your home, strengthen your commitment, and teach you how to love according to His design.

1. Marriage Was God's Idea

Marriage did not begin with a government, a culture, or a human tradition. Its foundation is found in God's creation.

Genesis 2:18 (ESV)

“Then the LORD God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.’”

From the beginning, God recognized the value of companionship. His design was not for marriage to be a competition between two people, but a relationship in which a husband and wife could share life, grow together, and fulfill their God-given responsibilities.

Marriage is a gift, but it is also a responsibility. It requires intentional love, humility, patience, faithfulness, forgiveness, and a willingness to grow.

We cannot build a God-centered marriage using only our feelings, personal expectations, or the examples we inherited from our families. We must allow God's Word to challenge our assumptions and guide our decisions.

Reflection: Have you been building your marriage according to God's Word, or according to your own expectations of what marriage should be?

2. Marriage Is a Covenant of Unity and Commitment

Jesus reaffirmed God's original design for marriage in Mark 10. Marriage is more than sharing a home, raising children, managing finances, or maintaining a relationship. It is a covenant that calls two people into a profound commitment to one another before God.

Mark 10:8–9 (ESV)

“and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

The phrase one flesh speaks to a profound unity. Husband and wife remain distinct individuals, with their own personalities, responsibilities, and perspectives, yet they are called to build a shared life.

This unity does not mean that you will always agree. It means that disagreement should not automatically become division, and conflict should not turn your spouse into your enemy.

A healthy marriage makes room for honest conversations, mutual respect, accountability, and reconciliation. Unity is strengthened when both spouses are willing to listen, take responsibility for their actions, and pursue solutions rather than simply trying to win an argument.

Today, ask yourself:

  • Do my words and actions strengthen or weaken our unity?

  • Am I protecting our commitment through honesty, faithfulness, and healthy boundaries?

  • When conflict arises, do I seek understanding and resolution, or do I focus on proving that I am right?

  • What is one practical way I can demonstrate love and commitment this week?

Remember: You cannot control your spouse's choices, but you can surrender your own heart, words, attitudes, and actions to God.

3. Your Spouse Is Your Partner, Not Your Enemy

Marriage can become a battlefield when two people begin fighting against each other instead of working together through their challenges.

Misunderstandings, financial pressures, unmet expectations, family interference, betrayal, resentment, and unresolved wounds can create distance between spouses. When these issues remain unaddressed, it becomes easy to view the other person as the problem rather than recognizing the need to confront the problem itself.

Scripture reminds us that spiritual warfare must be approached with spiritual discernment. Ephesians 6 teaches believers to stand firm in God's strength and to put on the whole armor of God.

Ephesians 6:10–18 (ESV)

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,”

Notice the instruction: be strong in the Lord. God calls us to stand firm in His strength, truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, peace, and Word.

This passage does not give us permission to label our spouse as evil or assume that every disagreement is a spiritual attack. Instead, it calls us to recognize that spiritual warfare requires discernment and that our response must be grounded in God's truth.

Sometimes the battle requires prayer. Sometimes it requires repentance, forgiveness, a difficult but honest conversation, professional counseling, or stronger boundaries. Often, it requires more than one of these.

Your spouse is not your spiritual warfare strategy. Do not turn prayer into a weapon of accusation. Pray for God's wisdom to address the real issues, expose destructive patterns, heal wounds, and lead both of you toward truth.

Today, we begin by asking God to show us how to become better partners in the marriage He has entrusted to us.

4. Invite God to Become the Center of Your Home

A God-centered marriage does not mean a marriage without problems. It means a marriage in which God is invited into the problems, decisions, conversations, and daily routines.

It means choosing to seek His wisdom when emotions are high. It means allowing His Word to correct our attitudes. It means practicing forgiveness without ignoring accountability, pursuing peace without pretending that nothing is wrong, and choosing faithfulness even when marriage requires sacrifice.

Making God the center of your home begins with personal surrender.

Before praying, “Lord, change my spouse,” consider praying:

  • Lord, change what needs to change in me.

  • Teach me to love with patience and humility.

  • Help me speak truth without cruelty and listen without defensiveness.

  • Reveal the habits and attitudes that are damaging our unity.

  • Give us the wisdom to seek help when we need it.

  • Teach us to build our marriage according to Your design.

You may be entering this fast with joy, disappointment, grief, or uncertainty. Whatever your circumstances, bring them honestly before God. You do not need to pretend that your marriage is perfect to begin seeking His guidance.

And remember: pursuing restoration does not mean tolerating abuse or remaining in danger. If you or your children are unsafe, seek appropriate professional support and immediate protection. Prayer and practical steps toward safety can go together.

5. Today's Practical Action: Write Your Marriage Declaration

Today, take 10–15 minutes to write a personal declaration describing the marriage you desire to build according to God's Word.

Do not write only about what you want your spouse to change. Include the attitudes, habits, and commitments you are willing to cultivate in your own life.

Use the following prompts:

  1. God's design: What biblical principles do I want to guide our marriage?

  2. Unity: How can I contribute to greater understanding, respect, and partnership?

  3. Faithfulness: What boundaries and commitments help protect our covenant?

  4. Communication: What needs to change in how we handle disagreement?

  5. Spiritual foundation: What practical steps can help us invite God into our daily home life?

Then complete this declaration:

“With God's help, I commit to building my marriage on the foundation of His Word. I will seek to grow in love, humility, faithfulness, forgiveness, and wisdom. I will not treat my spouse as my enemy, but will seek God's direction as we confront challenges together. I will take responsibility for my own actions, pursue healthy communication and accountability, and invite God to lead my heart and home. Lord, teach us to build our marriage according to Your design.”

Keep your declaration somewhere you can revisit throughout these 14 days. If it is safe and appropriate, invite your spouse to write a declaration as well. The goal is not to demand perfection from one another, but to establish a shared commitment to growth.

Day 1 Prophetic Prayer: Lord, Restore Your Design for Our Marriage

Heavenly Father,

We come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, acknowledging that You are the Author of marriage. You established its design, its purpose, and its foundation. Today, we surrender our expectations, assumptions, disappointments, and personal agendas to You.

Lord, teach us what Your Word says about marriage. Help us understand the sacredness of our covenant and the responsibility we have to love, honor, and remain faithful to one another.

Search our hearts, O God. Reveal pride, selfishness, bitterness, unforgiveness, dishonesty, and every attitude that weakens our unity. Give us the courage to take responsibility for our own actions. Where we have wounded one another, lead us toward genuine repentance, healing, and restoration.

Father, teach us to recognize our spouse as our partner, not our enemy. Give us discernment to address the real challenges in our marriage without turning against one another. Strengthen us in Your truth. Clothe us with righteousness, faith, salvation, peace, and the wisdom of Your Word.

Where communication has broken down, teach us to listen and speak with grace. Where trust has been damaged, guide us toward truth, accountability, and the patient work of rebuilding. Where we have become distant, show us the steps we can take toward reconnection. Where we need help, give us humility to seek wise and appropriate support.

Lord, become the center of our home. Let our decisions, conversations, parenting, finances, and relationships reflect Your wisdom. Help us build a marriage that honors You, not merely in what we say, but in how we live.

We declare that our hope is in You. We will not depend on human strength alone, but will seek Your guidance and obey Your Word. Give us grace for this journey and help us remain faithful to the work You place before us.

Lord, teach us to build our marriage according to Your design. Let Your truth guide us, Your love transform us, and Your wisdom direct our steps. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.

Today's Declaration

My marriage belongs to God. His Word is my foundation, His wisdom is my guide, and His love is the standard I seek to follow. I will take responsibility for my own growth, pursue unity without compromising truth, and trust God to guide us through the challenges before us. Today, I begin the journey of building according to His design.

Join Us for Day 2

Today, we return to God's blueprint for marriage. Tomorrow, we will examine the destructive patterns that can weaken a marriage and ask God to reveal what needs healing, repentance, and change.

Do not underestimate what God can do when you make room for His truth and commit to taking faithful, practical steps.
